How the UAE is building a globally competitive aerospace ecosystem across aviation, defence, space, manufacturing, and advanced air mobility
When discussing the aerospace industry in the United Arab Emirates, well organisation and technological investment is at the forefront. Within the sector, IDAK has been particularly active in recent years.
As an aerospace technology company, IDAK is increasing relations, projects, and partnerships within the UAE aerospace industry and seeking investment opportunity within the Emirate aimed at developing aerospace systems, technologies, and platforms.
The UAE has transformed itself from a regional aviation consumer into a rapidly emerging aerospace technology designer, manufacturer, integrator, and innovation hub. Leveraging strategic geography, sovereign investment capacity, and an ambitious national vision, the state is positioning aerospace as a cornerstone of its post-hydrocarbon economy.
Today, the country plays a growing role across civil aviation, defence aerospace, space systems, advanced manufacturing, and emerging air mobility. Such an aerospace strategy is anchored within national priorities. These being economic diversification, national security, and global connectivity.
These objectives are embedded in long-term frameworks such as the UAE Vision 2031, Operation 300 Billion, and the National Space Strategy. Aerospace has been identified as a high-value sector capable of delivering skilled employment, export revenues, and technology spillovers into adjacent industries.
Geographically, the UAE sits at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, making it one of the world’s most important aviation transit hubs. This natural advantage has catalyzed the growth of downstream aerospace manufacturing, maintenance, and services.
Global airlines to industrial capability
The UAE hosts two of the world’s most influential long-haul carriers, Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways, which together operate some of the largest wide-body fleets globally. Their scale has driven demand for MRO, aircraft interiors, component repair and aviation training.
Entities such as Etihad Engineering, Emirates Engineering, and Sanad (Abu Dhabi-based engine MRO specialist) have evolved into internationally certified providers serving both regional and global customers. This has allowed the UAE to capture more value across the aviation lifecycle rather than remaining purely an operator market.
The EDGE Group
In addition, defence aerospace represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the UAE’s industry. The establishment of EDGE Group in 2019 marked a turning point. By consolidating over 30 defence and aerospace entities under a single structure, spanning land, air, naval, cyber, and space systems, and employing thousands of specialists in defence and technology sectors. EDGE has created one of the most integrated defence technology groups not only in the Middle East but also globally.
The President, CEO and board members of EDGE Group dedicate themselves to aerospace and technology with a global and spectacularly visionary approach. EDGE’s leadership embodies the UAE’s strategic push toward defence industrial autonomy, technological sophistication, and international competitiveness.
At Dubai Airshow EDGE went up a level with the EDGE-Anduril Production Alliance strategic partnership, of advanced autonomous systems. Earning the group 37th position on the SIPRI Global Top 100 list. The partnership’s activities span unmanned aerial systems, guied munitions and precision weapons, electro-optics, sensors, aircraft subsystems and aerostructures.
Parallel to EDGE, Strata Manufacturing has become a globally recognized aerostructures supplier, producing composite and metallic components for Airbus, Boeing, Leonardo, and other Tier-1 OEMs. CalIdus Group too deserves note, an aerospace and defence manufacturer of trainer aircraft, land vehicles, and integrated defence solutions.
Subsequently, the UAE has emerged as a serious space actor within the last decade. Through the UAE Space Agency and Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, the country has successfully launched Earth observation satellites, sent the Hope Probe to Mars and developed in-house satellite design and mission control capabilities. This push complements the broader aerospace ecosystem by driving capabilities in avionics, software, materials, propulsion, and systems engineering, many of which are dual-use by nature.
eVTOL, Drones, and Sustainable Aviation
Looking forward, the UAE is actively positioning itself as an early adopter and testbed for next-generation aerospace technologies. For example, AAM, large-scale deployment of drones, SAF and hydrogen-ready infrastructure, AI-enabled air traffic management as well as predictive maintenance.
Global aviation and aerospace events have invited global investment in this regard, DubaiAirshow and IDEK being central to this.
Regulatory bodies such as the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) have adopted a proactive and innovation-friendly stance, enabling pilot projects and fast-track certifications in collaboration with international partners.
The UAE aerospace industry is transitioning from a capability-building to a value-creation phase. With strong government backing, globally integrated national companies, and an increasingly sophisticated regulatory environment, the UAE is well positioned to become a leading aerospace hub spanning aviation, defence, space, and AAM. At IDAK we are proud to be a part of this journey.
